Shortlisted for the 2020 Tasmanian Architecture Awards is the heritage-meets-modernist dream home that is Hampden Road by Archier.

The skilful architects at Archier wanted to find a balance between connection and separation for their newly-retired clients. Their vision was to curate distinct spaces throughout the home for each person’s own pursuits, alongside communal areas where they could come together to enjoy quality time with friends and family.

What makes the Hampden Road project so spectacular is the amalgamation of a heritage-listed building with a contemporary glazed pavilion at the rear end of the building. The dance between new and old, contrast and continuity, is flawlessly executed.

This is truly a building that stands the test of time, with durable natural materials of steel, timber, concrete, brass, and marble all coming together to create an elegant, earthy space.

Think vast floor to ceiling windows, dramatic skylights, semi-gloss rendered walls which provide a backdrop for a sizable art collection, and sculptures that blur the lines between art gallery and home.

The light-filled historic charm of the Georgian cottage is juxtaposed perfectly with the timelessness of the kitchen and its glossy black walls, two-toned marble island bench, and stainless steel appliances.

This luxe dark theme is continued throughout the main bathroom, with Pegasi range tapware by Faucet Strommen. Stunning raw brushed brass in colour, the tapware selected for the Hampden Road project is known for its clean, simple lines and impeccable Australian-made quality. These subtle yet classic details add a touch of the old-world appeal that makes this home so impressive.
