Affectionately referred to as the ‘Pyramids of Flinders’ by locals, the Bellows House by Architects EAT is a delightfully unusual family home tucked away in the heart of Flinders, Victoria. The bleached concrete interiors, pyramid-like roofs, and bold colour palette of the space tell an architectural story about light and time.

Architects EAT are well-known for their ability to evoke curiosity and engagement from passers-by effortlessly. As you walk past Bellows House, you get a glimpse of the shadows as they animate the cut-out concrete bricks of the exterior, instigating a reaction whether it be wonder or confusion. Albert Mo, director at the reputable firm, suggested that concrete was one of their favourite materials to build with, as it requires technology, engineering, and craftsmanship to create a timeless, sturdy space. Perhaps that’s why Bellows House has such a Roman Empire-esque feel about it.

The colossal central skylights of the building shine light on the concrete detailing within, resembling the pleated sides of an antique, accordion-like Bellows camera. As natural light cascades through the home, it kisses the concrete to symbolise time passing by. Particularly in the kitchen, where the most exquisite Concrete Collective custom benchtop emulates that same signature pyramid-like effect of the roofing. It’s all very clever and playful, yet the textured finishes of this home make it casual enough to be livable too. The Bellows House project is visual contrast epitomised, with smoky concrete juxtaposing the Aegean blues and creams of the artwork and soft furnishings. The warmer hues of timber and brick warm up a cool contemporary space so that it still feels like breezy coastal living.
