Nestled in a private suite within Tasmania’s iconic wilderness retreat Pumphouse Point is the pinnacle of pure luxury coupled with ecological sustainability. The Retreat – a free-standing accommodation pavilion – will surely leave your jaw agape. It’s no wonder that it was conceived from the aptly named design geniuses at JAWS Architects

Designed to be an immersive, exclusive experience overlooking Tasmania’s sublime Lake St Clair, The Retreat brings together meticulously curated interior design features rich in materiality, texture, and tone. The lake’s surrounds – from the dappled rocks to the fertile moss – heavily influence the interior of the space.

Take the warm timber-panelled interior, for instance, that emulates a cocooning, protective atmosphere for guests. With plenty of natural light, the space’s expansive floor-to-ceiling windows with full wilderness views create a sense of calm relaxation. Yet the bathroom, as a direct contrast, goes inward entirely – to bring your attention to the experience of bathing, this time with only skylights connecting you to the natural landscape surrounding you. The shower yet again juxtaposes this perception perfectly, where a frameless glass window captures the view and immerses you in nature yet again.

Every interior detail brings about the best wares of local design talent, including the gorgeous handmade basin by Hobart ceramicist Lindsey Wherrett to emphasise a connection with place. The Retreat is a complete one-of-a-kind experience, and gives the impression that every item has been personally made for this space alone. It’s remarkable and we invite you to experience it for yourself.
